Editor’s note: This article was excerpted from our Salon ownners Day Spa start-up guideavailable from Entrepreneur Bookstore. Since the dawn of ownefs new millennium, the stock market has been in a freefall and the economy has been in the doldrums. But it was a good time to start a hair salon and day spa—and it still is today. Sps is it possible for a service sector like the beauty industry to continue to grow, given the state of the economy? No doubt because many of the services offered by salons simply cannot be duplicated at home—or at least not duplicated. Also, the baby boomers, who now constitute the largest population segment in America, are more than willing and are financially able to spend money on any personal care service they perceive will dpa them look younger and more attractive. What all this prosperity means to you is that the prospects for people who own personal care businesses are bright. And just as a side note: When we say «salon» throughout this article, we mean salon and day spa, as the title of the start-up kit indicates. The Opportunities There are three ways you can make your mark on the hair industry.

Types of Employee Arrangements

Business Ideas Tool. You have found the perfect business idea, and now you are ready to take the next step. There is more to starting a business than just registering it with the state. We have put together this simple step guide to starting your day spa. These steps will ensure that your new business is well planned out, registered properly and legally compliant. A clear plan is essential for success as an entrepreneur. It will help you map out the specifics of your business and discover some unknowns. A few important topics to consider are:. The cost of opening a day spa business depends on the type of day spa you want to open. A number of day spa owners now provide mobile services to their clients, which means less monthly overhead for space rent. Many day spa owners also rent part of their space to independent contractors with their own equipment.

Step 1: Creating a business plan for your spa

I spend my workdays giving all different types of facials acne, anti-aging, relaxing, deep pore cleaning, microdermabrasion, micro current facial toning. I also have a menu full of waxing services including: eyebrow waxing, full leg and arm, bikini, underarm and just about anything else that clients want hairless. Airbrush spray tanning is also plays a big part in my spa business. My work entails everything that I listed above and much more. Being a licensed esthetician and spa owner I know that I must show up on time, set an example for the others who work in my spa and be reliable and educated to provide extreme value to my clients as the industry has become very saturated. I not only give spa treatments and services to my clients, but I also oversee the financials of the spa which include: paying bills, collecting rent from others who rent space from me, organizing advertising and marketing promotions, cleaning up to ensure it looks spotless for every client who walks in the door, setting up appointments for maintenance and repairs this week I am dealing with a broken air conditioning unit. I am in charge of training all new estheticians that come to work at my spa.

Types of Salon Services

And this is why I would never hire a employee I would rent space. But then again, I wouldn’t own a spa. Too much high maintenance, both equipment and customers Some have higher services fees for the massage or maybe other services such as skin care or yoga and some a bit lower. The initial investment in a facility and equipment is expensive and advertising is a huge cost especially in the beginning. The business must sell over massage sessions. Full time massage practice for an individual massage therapist ranges from between massage sessions a year and MANY massage therapist only want to work part time. At the same time and for ever after, the business must generate enough gross income to pay all expenses including wages BEFORE the owners get any profits. This amount can range from. In addition, all the other overhead operating expenses must be paid. There are not just massage therapists to pay, but also receptionists and housekeeping, management, repairs and maintenance staff. I wouldn’t take all the risk for this type of profit.

I spend Monday and Tuesday mentoring and coaching other estheticians and spa owners: helping them set goals, overcome road blocks and find ways to increase their income and build a lucrative business. I will usually arrive around 10am and work until 8pm. This is the beauty of being a spa owner… you can really set your own hours and determine what you want your week to look like.

I choose to work hard while I am there and will see an average of clients a day. I spend the day with my clients performing all the spa treatments that I mentioned earlier. Most of my clients have become friends so a typical day at work feels more like a social gathering to me. I feel thankful to be so busy and am grateful that my business continued to grow throughout a very challenging economic time. Before launching a career in the industry, I spent my first 10 years out of college working with women from all walks of life as a flight attendant for a major airline.

The only answer was diving into something I was truly passionate. As an esthetician I love helping people achieve and maintain beautiful skin. I love making my clients look and feel beautiful.

As a spa owner I love the fact that I provide others with a clean, friendly work environment where they can make money to provide for themselves and their family.

I love the stability of knowing that I have a business of my own and really no one to answer to when decisions need to be. The thing I dislike the most about being a spa owner is that sometimes the day-to-day duties take me away from being a really good esthetician to my clients.

I am compensated as a spa owner in a number of different ways. I work as a licensed esthetician in the spa and I also have a large selection of retail products available for customers to purchase. This is such a hard questions to answer because it varies so. Like any career I believe if it is your passion and you work hard at it- the sky is the limit! The schooling needed to become an esthetician is based on hours and the hours are determined by the state you live in; The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology regulate.

The biggest challenge I deal with being a spa owner is the fact that I also work as an esthetician in the spa. The most rewarding parts of my job are 1. Get ready to work hard and reap many benefits! The beauty industry has hit the billion dollar mark and continues to grow… if you devote time and energy you can build an wonderful place to work that can bring happiness, joy and lots of money into your life. Like I said earlier being a spa owner can be as easy or as hard as you choose to make it.

Over the last 2 years I have hired a support team and now I can step away more. I try to take one week a month off and focus on catching up on paper work and devoting time to others things that I enjoy doing.

I have a vision to open one more spa, which will be unique to anything that is on the market today and I would love to share, but I am holding the idea near and dear to me for the moment. I am also committed to growing my coaching and mentoring business and I am really enjoying the time I get to spend with other spa owners and helping them see how beautiful their lives can be.

I want to know as an owner and operator as well as a working Esthetician in your spa, do you pay yourself a commission first, and then take care of operating expenses, paying the business and such? What is the proper formula. Dental Hygiene DH is a over saturated market. If your heart is in it, go for it anyways. Just try not to think you will be guarenteed a job with DH. So if your heart is in esthetics go for it over DH. Helped or inspired? Leave a comment! You can also ask questions and answer them in the comments section as.

While running a successful spa can be challenging, according to Lynne McNees, president of the International Spa Association, the spa industry has the bonus of being nearly recession proof. For millions of people, this means visiting a spa to help them disconnect and recharge their batteries. In fact, during the height of the recession, the U. What makes these numbers even more impressive is that the spa industry is mainly composed of thousands of individually owned spas. While there are a number of chain spas, none of them hold a dominant position in the industry. You will also need a solid business plan to help you identify your potential costs and create a roadmap that you can follow. Below are some of the key decisions a business plan can help you make. While there are numerous services you can offer, the International Spa Association considers a business to be a spa as long as it offers at least two of the following services: massage, skin care, or body treatments. Taking the time to carefully select your service offerings will help you to better differentiate your business from your competitors. For example, you might decide that you only want to specialize in just a few services instead of offering a wide variety. Or you might decide that you want to offer services that are not commonly available at other local spas. The services offered at most day spas generally fall into three categories: skin and body care, hair removal, and makeup. You will want to assess the cost of the equipment needed to offer a particular service against the potential for profit. Some services, like hydrotherapy, may require a significant investment, particularly if you need to upgrade your infrastructure such as installing plumbing lines and running electrical as well as the cost of the equipment. While luxury day spas have traditionally been seen as a service that primarily appeals only to women, a number of successful spas are increasingly designing their services to appeal to men, as well as couples. Natalie Tessler set her Chicago-based Spa Space in a location surrounded by office buildings. When her research confirmed that male-oriented offerings in the area were do spa owners make money and far between, she began to offer a variety of male-only services.
