I could never make a living at it because it takes me a tremendous amount of time to create something that is much too small to command a decent price and turn a profit. Most professional woodworkers and furniture makers will tell you to make sure you get a nice big table on offer to your customers, and I would. By comparison you feel like you have to give away the chairs. People expect you to surround that nice big table with six or eight furmiture them, but the whole set should be made for less than the price of the one table! Still you can never have enough little boxes. As a professional hand tool woodworker, Richard found hand tools to be the far more efficient solution for a one man workshop. Richard runs ‘The English Woodworker’ as an online resource and video education for those looking for a fuss free approach to building fine furniture by hand. I did the small item thing for a few years when I was selling stuff at craft shows. I then changed my designs so I could mass produce them and therefore have more to sell in a similar amount of time. You can build a hell of a lot into a little box and maing a small quantity of fantastically figured timber…. I always keep one big project on the go a large eight!

Before posting, check that your content doesn’t violate the rules below. Don’t be rude. Zero tolerance for sexism and crude innuendo. Project posts are OC Original Content only. If you didn’t make it don’t post it. Exception: parents posting for their school-aged children. Links to our members shops. Can you make good money building furniture? I don’t woodwork for a living, but I do sell things to support my hobby. It’s very feast or famine, and never consistent or reliable. But then again I’ve never tried to make it consistent or reliable. Unless you are extremely talented and fall into the right market. I know one person who is successful and has over a 2 year wait. I work in the oilfields and want get out of it. I’ve always wanted to get into woodworking and was wondering if I could get into as a career. What would be the best approach? The best approach would be to apprentice at a cabinet shop or furniture making shop that is already doing business. You get experience in the proper methods of building. Access to equipment without the startup costs involved. And, the benefit of a steady paycheck.

I try to write posts covering frequently emailed questions… to save you time in emailing, and me time having to respond! This is what we can a win-win sitch! Truth be told, I wish someone would answer this question for ME! Be active on craigslist so you have an idea of what people are selling things for. Did you pull it out of a dumpster of off a burnpile? Did you inherit it from your granny? Did you buy stripper, wood putty, sandpaper, primer, paint, glaze and poly just for this one piece of furniture? All these things figure in. Bottom line? But I know people that have spreadsheets that log their hours, and actually give themselves and hourly amount of money and then add everything up at the end. I do however give this some consideration when pricing a piece. If I spent tons of time doing tedious painting, I want to feel like my efforts are valued by someone else… so I may put a higher price on it. If you finish an end table, and absolutely LOVE IT and have the perfect place for it in your home… consider keeping it!

I’m soooo stoked to share this post with you. I truly believe that flipping furniture is one the most accessible side hustles out there, and is scalable enough to actually become a full-time gig. My good friend Virginia flips full-time and is here to walk you through the basics. Every time I tell a friend or family how much I sold mame piece of my furniture for they are shocked and amazed that I can make that much money doing what I do from home.
