These services in turn help developers find better jobs and also learn about companies in a way that is respectful to the user experience no spammy inmail, no flash ads, etc. We consider the developer experience in everything we do, which is what makes everything we sell as a company unique. Companies are asking for developers , and we need experts to answer the call. In order for this to work, we need people on both sides of the equation. The more companies and developers we have, the better and faster the matching we can do with developers and hopefully their dream jobs. For companies, we aim to match them with a handful of candidates that are an awesome match, not candidates that barely match at all. This is where we can provide value.

I sometimes get asked by regular people in the actual real world what it is that I do for a living, and here’s my 15 second answer:. We built a sort of Wikipedia website for computer programmers to post questions and answers. It’s called Stack Overflow. I currently do other stuff now , and I have since , but if I will be known for anything when I’m dead, clearly it is going to be good old Stack Overflow. Here’s where I’d normally segue into a bunch of rah-rah stuff about how great Stack Overflow is, and thus how implicitly great I am by association for being a founder, and all. Hi, everyone! A lot of stuff has happened since I was writing all those blog posts about Aeron chairs 18 years ago. Some of those blog posts are old enough to go to college. And, also: Stack Overflow will be ten years old soon! So I thought it would be cool to get the old band back together for a little reunion tour over the next few weeks. I want to catch you all up on some stuff but mostly I want to tell the story of Stack Overflow in a not-completely-disorganized way. Today is chapter one. I want to talk a little bit about what it was like for developers before Stack Overflow, the problem that Stack Overflow tried to solve, and early origins. In the early days of the Internet, before the Web, there was a system called Usenet which created primitive online discussion forums. When programmers had problems with their code, they could ask a question on a Usenet forum. They were technically called newsgroups, not forums even though they had nothing to do with news. As soon as the world wide web became a thing, Usenet was immediately technically obsolete. We programmers started asking about our problems on various web-based forums, of which there were thousands. One of the biggest such forums was called Experts Exchange. The first version of Experts Exchange was not successful financially. Apparently they went bankrupt in Eventually new owners bought the assets and resurrected the site with a clever business model: charging money to read answers. The first problem was that programmers with problems would search on Google, not on Experts Exchange. And Google only knows about free, open websites, not websites that you have to pay to access.

This is where we can provide value. We want to optimize things. Our position is relatively unique because we can help both companies and developers at the same time. I believe we can do. I believe we can omney better at it than anyone. One step of improving that is our Developer Story. It also lets you find a job. And with Developer Story, we want to change the perception that developers are only as good as their last gig or a title.

We want to give you something you want. We have brilliant people working on this, and a large part of it is all after an overall moneh understanding developers, so that we can serve you better. So, how do we feel about ad blockers? What are we doing with ads now? We have a little more smarts mke what technologies you, as a developer, like than most places.

We want to see what we can apply there to make ads always more relevant. Did you know we have a lot of unpaid inventory on Stack Overflow every month? We looked at. We have intentionally left a lot of money on the table. Sacrificing quality is not what we want to be known.

We believe there are better ways. These are the people actually making money from selling ads. Do you have any idea how fucking rare that is? I have so many, so many things I want to build for you. I saw mone presentation from Adrianna our relatively new CMO that blew me away. They have some awesome things in the works to help us with a unified brand. Marketing, like development, is mostly about connecting the dots. Trusting each other and sharing values related to how we make money directly connects to how we build internal tools. So that Architecture team I run?

Our email preferences page is, to be blunt, a total disaster. This is an old artifact of growing from one site to many and it needs love.

We have people working on that right. One of our designers, Donna, is working hard to tremendously simplify. We hope to have one email address for a user and a single place you can manage all email that ever comes from Stack Overflow.

If you are annoyed, it must take at most one to two clicks to unsubscribe from. Ma,e communication and interaction has to reflect our respect for you. Our mission is to improve life for developers. We have to deserve your trust; we have earn it. If we add new categories of emails later not just categorizing something we send todayexisting users will not be opted in.

Only new users will get defaults. We intentionally designed the table schema around. I hope Stack Overflow serves you in other ways, and I appreciate your time. There are so many things in my head right. I want to test an idea we came up with at midnight to improve consumption of developer news.

I want to build several data connections that are almost there for our internal teams to save them time. I want to do a thousand things. I want to get the money part of being a company out of the way so we can build all the useful things our communities want and need. I know we can do that, and in a good way for. I hope you agree.
