I have been wanting to be able to objectively compare feature parity between different engines for. I have experience in Unity for 6—8 years, while Unreal Engine is just started around January It will come in handy when I see things in Unreal Engine that is sorely missing in Unity, or just recently added but in preview status, or in a development road. This article is not for Unreal Engine userbecause I did not spend time explaining Unity terms. This article is in-progress. It will probably takes years to complete and make a completely leve judgement. This article is biased towards bad stuff in Unity.

Yes I know there have no doubt been many Unity Vs Unreal threads before, but most of the time when I see such things they just tend to consist of childish «this engine sux lulz X is better lol» type of comments. For example, I have heard that the creators of the System shock remake and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak originally started out with Unity but then switched over to Unreal 4. What is the reason for this? Switching engines mid development is a pretty big decision to make so they must have very strong reasons for doing so. First time I downloaded UE4 and opened up the editor, reality set in…

Blend Spaces. Aim Offset. State Machines. Skeleton Assets. Blend Spaces are special assets which can be sampled in AnimGraphs that allow for blending of animations based on the values of two inputs. Simple blending between two animations based on a single input can be performed using one of the standard Blend Nodes available deesign Animation Blueprints. Blend Spaces provide a means of doing more complex blending between multiple animations based on multiple values currently limited to two.

In this How-to, we use a Blend Space to blend between walking and jogging animations based on the character’s movement speed and movement desifn. This will allow us to use the playable character that was created along with the Animation Starter Pack project. We need to delete this character from the level in order to spawn in as the character from the previous step. Blend Space assets need a Skeleton asset to reference, here we are using a shortcut to create a Blend Space from this Skeleton asset which we called MyBlendSpace.

This allows us to use a different animation when our speed is at max and we are not moving left or right, we are jogging forward. The default Blend Space does not include Walking states which our Blend Space does, so let’s replace it with ours! Locate the section marked Crouch in the graph and delete it to remove the warning error.

By default, the Animation Starter Pack has bindings created for crouch which our project does not. For this example, we will remove the ability to crouch walk. We are changing our movement speed based on if Left Shift is held and will alter speeed character’s movement speed in-game. Click Compile then click the Play in editor button from the Toolbar.

When playing in the Editor, using WASD to move around, the character will now walk by default and blend between walking animations when changing directions.

I saw all these amazing environments being created with UE4. It was so inspiring. I wanted to do the same! I had these great ideas to create but now I wasn’t so sure. You end up trying to piece together information czn different tutorials all over the internet. But you don’t know if this is what you should be watching to begin. You don’t know how this tutorial fits into a larger picture of learning UE4. Every time you sit down you have precious minutes to get through a tutorial to learn another can you make money speed level design ue4 of the puzzle of Leve. But you don’t know what you don’t know. You end up watching tutorials and reading documentation only to realize this is NOT what levle needed. I WASTED hundreds hours if not thousdans watching videos, reading blog posts, forum posts, tutorials, comments and moneyy over countless documentation pages. Reading, watching, taking notes on everything I could find that ultimately took me down the wrong path, showed me what I didn’t need to learn yet, confused and overwhelmed me .
